It’s the first question nearly everyone asks, and getting it wrong is expensive in both directions.
Too small and the stove runs flat out all evening, never quite heats the room, and wears itself out doing it. Too big and you’re either roasted out of your own sitting room or running it slumbering — which glazes the glass, tars the flue and burns fuel inefficiently.

This is a guide only. Actual output depends on your property, layout, chimney, ceiling height, open-plan spaces and whether the stove is also heating water or other rooms. We'll confirm the right appliance on a site visit.
How the Calculation Works
The rule of thumb the trade uses is straightforward. Multiply the room’s length, width and height in metres to get the volume, then divide by a figure that reflects how well the building holds heat.
A room measuring 4m x 4m with a 2.4m ceiling comes to 38.4 cubic metres. In an average, reasonably insulated house that works out around 2.7kW. In an older, draughtier property, closer to 3.8kW.
That’s why the insulation setting matters as much as the measurements. Same room, very different answer.
What Else Affects the Size You Need
The calculator gives you a solid starting point, but a few things shift it:
- Open-plan spaces. If the room opens into a hall, stairwell or kitchen, you’re heating more than you measured.
- High or vaulted ceilings. Heat rises. A room with an open ceiling needs more output than the floor area suggests.
- Large windows and patio doors. Glass loses heat quickly, particularly older single glazing.
- Exposure. A gable-end room, or a house on an exposed site, loses more heat than a sheltered mid-terrace.
- Boiler stoves. If the stove is also heating water or radiators, the output needed changes completely.
- How you actually live. Some people want a background warmth all evening; others want the room hot in twenty minutes.
Why Bigger Isn’t Better
It’s a common instinct to size up “just to be sure.” It usually backfires.
An oversized stove spends most of its life running slumbered, because that’s the only way to make the room bearable. Burning at low temperatures produces more tar and creosote, which glazes the glass, coats the flue and means more frequent sweeping. It’s also less efficient, so you burn more fuel for less useful heat.
A correctly sized stove run properly is cleaner, more efficient and lasts longer.
Ventilation and Building Regulations
Once you go above 5kW, additional permanent room ventilation is normally required. That’s not something to work out on the day of installation — it affects where the stove can go and what work the room needs beforehand.
Every installation also has to meet the relevant building regulations for the appliance, the hearth and the flue. When we install a stove, that’s our responsibility, not something we leave you to sort out.
