Our Experience With the Gazco Onyx Avanti 190 Electric Fire

The Onyx Avanti 190 is the largest in the range, built for a room where the fire is meant to be the centrepiece. If you’ve a wide opening or an open-plan space and want serious presence, this is the one — everything that makes the Avanti special, at real scale.

The Avanti was once the flagship of the Gazco electric fire range, until the Fusion took that title. Even so, when customers come into our showroom, plenty still prefer the Avanti over its more expensive, and on paper more spectacular, successor.

That says a lot about the importance of seeing these fires in real life — or at the very least through properly shot images and video, not a brochure render.

Why do some people prefer the Avanti?

We think it comes down to fullness. Standing in front of it, there’s a real depth to the flame — a genuine number of individual flames in the rear display, which you can slow down or speed up to whatever effect you want. You also get far more control over each set of lights individually. The Fusion, by comparison, works more like two TV-style screens cycling through preset displays.

Wi-Fi control

Every light is controllable from the remote, but the Avanti range also has Wi-Fi control. Download the app and you get even more precise control over each individual light set — including the fuel bed lights shining up from beneath the coals, the two different flame colours at the rear, and — unique to the Avanti — logs with lights built in that flicker at the rear of the fire, creating an effect close to a real fire catching light. There’s also a large downlight from the top of the fire, lighting the logs from above.

Log sets

The Avanti comes with a spectacular standard log set, but you can also buy a birch log set separately — mix the two, or go with an entirely different display.

Heat, or just the display

The fire runs with or without the heater, so you can have the flame effect without heating the room. Set your desired temperature on the remote, and the heater switches off once the room reaches it.

One thing worth knowing: the thermostat is built into the remote itself. Sit on it, or leave it under a cushion, and it’ll happily control the room’s temperature from wherever it ends up. The maximum setting is 32°C.

Installation

It comes with all the trims needed to insert it into plasterboard or a cabinet. It can also be fitted single, two, or three-sided, thanks to removable panels on the left and right — simply unscrew the panel on whichever side you want visible.

MyFlame app available for iOS and Android smart devices, the Onyx fires bring Wifi controlled electric fires to another level.
The app provides precise control over Onyx fires including flame display brightness and flame speed settings. You can program heat schedules and mix and match the colours of your jaw dropping display.
The Onyx fires can also be connected to an optional Mood Lighting kit that is also Wifi controlled through the MyFlame app.
The Mood Lighting kit features the same colour palette as the Chromalight Plus system and can be placed around a TV or on shelving adding even more control and achieving the desired ambience for your room, all controlled via Wifi through the MyFlame app or via your thermostatic remote control.
